Cornwall cousins and Devon with Jade and Sam

  8 - 16 August

CORNWALL

Jade had organised a rental car from Exeter for our week. So we trained to Exeter to collect our car. Lesson learnt at car rental place - need an actual credit card for deposit, credit card on phone not enough! Debit Card not accepted but luckily Sam had his credit card with him, plus an extra £15 a day for additional drivers!🥴

We drove to my cousin's farm, Talskiddy, near St Columb Major, for afternoon tea of scones and clotted cream. Then out to watch a bit of the harvesting and back in for Cornish Pasties - I was 'home' - my dad was Cornish. My cousin, Alan, is my second cousin - his Grandmother and mine were sisters. We had a great time looking through old photos and family trees to work out all the connections - Paul was fantastic at interpreting the complex family tree! He could get my connections back to my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather who died in 1710!!

We were staying a half hour drive from the family farm at Par Sands, a nice coastal caravan park, where our 'unit' was in a transportable small house - it was very comfortable.

The next day was a day to explore our family connections with a visit to the church in St Columb Major for bell ringing lessons, climb to the top of the church tower (through the steepest of spiral steps and smallest of access doorways! We also had a look at the cemetery to visit our family connections graves. The history in this country! Alan's name has been cast into one of the church bells, to continue the family history!

The following day we explored a bit of Cornwall, visited a cheese factory for Paul (refer Cheese blog),  Gwennap Pit- a copper mining area which became a preaching pit.

A stop at the most southern point of England - Lizard point and we enjoyed a walk down to the beach and a swim.

Then onto the most westerly point Land's End, only 60km away. Land's End was a disappointment - so commercialised but we enjoyed a nice sunset.

The following day we had a day on the farm, Paul enjoyed helping with the  harvesting and space! While I enjoyed time with Kathleen and other family members.

On drive to Devon we stopped to find my dad's family home Colesent. With great success and the owner was so excited to meet us. He is painstakingly renovating the home to as  original as possible. Was wonderful to stand where dad had been 96 years earlier💖

Harry is the baby in the top photo.

Kitchen inside the house, notice the massive stone block above the coal range and the floor was laid with massive slate slabs!!

View Harry would have looked out at from the back garden.

DEVON
Next we drove into Devon and the gorgeous coastal area of Ilfracombe with its amazing narrow streets and 9 metre tides. Plus enjoying Devonshire Tea with a family friend Dot. We were wise enough to know in Cornwall it's jam then clotted cream whilst in Devon it's clotted cream then jam on the scones!🤣

Spot the differences!

Swimming pool created by concreting over the rocks around the edge and filled twice a day by the high tides.

  1. I'm missing all the clotted cream teas. Although maybe not in the heat. Looks like you guys are having a great time.
